A familiar trading name is only the start of identifying a lender. Before relying on a quote, connect the name on the website or storefront with the legal business, the relevant license record and the agreement you would sign.
Follow the identity through the transaction
Build a name trail before comparing offers
Write down the advertised name, website address, telephone number and location you are using. Then find the legal entity named in the proposed agreement. A brand and a legal company can have different names; the useful question is whether the documents explain that relationship clearly.
If a person calls with an offer, obtain the business name and a written reference before sharing sensitive information. Independently open the contact route you intended to use. A logo, a caller's knowledge of your name or a matching display name does not resolve the identity question.
Use the right record for the question
| Record | Compare | Question it leaves open |
|---|---|---|
| Business entity record | Legal name and entity identifiers | Which lending activity is permitted? |
| Relevant license record | Named entity, activity and displayed status | Does this record cover the offer in front of you? |
| Proposed agreement | Creditor name and contact details | Can you reconcile them with the records? |
A company registration and a lending license answer different questions. Florida's Office of Financial Regulation directs Consumer Finance license searches to its REAL system. Start with the regulator's Verify a License page, then compare the exact entity and activity with your paperwork.
Resolve a mismatch before signing
- Copy the creditor's name exactly, including any company suffix.
- Compare the location and identifiers shown in the relevant record.
- Ask for a written explanation if the brand, license holder and creditor differ.
- Keep that explanation with the version of the agreement you reviewed.
For example, a quote addressed to one business and an agreement naming another needs an explanation you can follow. Do not substitute a similarly named search result to fill the gap. If the identity remains unresolved, leave the agreement unsigned while you verify it.
Know where a later question will go
Before agreement
Record who supplied the quote, its date and the channel used. Request a copy that identifies the proposed creditor.
After agreement
Keep the signed documents, payment record and the address for written disputes. Note whether a separate company handles servicing.
For a complaint, describe the specific event, amount, date and requested correction. Keep copies of correspondence and reference numbers. A regulator's contact route can help you direct a licensing concern; it does not establish the outcome of an individual dispute.
Identity questions
Is a business registration enough?
It identifies an entity. Check the relevant licensing record separately for the activity being offered.
What if the agreement uses another name?
Obtain the relationship in writing and reconcile the creditor's identity before signing.
Should I search only the storefront name?
Also search the legal name and identifiers supplied in the documents. Avoid assuming that a close name match is the same business.
Continue with the lender, broker and referral role guide if several businesses are involved. Use the contact page for a specific identity question and the services directory to choose the transaction you need.
